Similar to Manhattan island of New York, the grid shape plan in Buenos Aires make it easy to stroll through the city. The centre around Florida is lively during day time: the pedestrian street Florida and the parallel streets Maipu, Esmeralda and Suipacha cross the avenues Paraguay, Córdoba, Viamonte, Tucumán.
Many of the buildings are offices, the Florida street is a shopping heaven, from best quality leather shops to bookstores or souvenir shops you can find anything. A chic shopping mall is located at the corner of Florida with Cordoba; Galerias Pacifico is a historical building with a patio converted into a shopping centre with high end brands. At the top of it is the Borges Cultural Centre and it is opened to public, including an exhibition of Borges’s life.
At the opposite corner of Galerias Pacifico is another historical nice building which is the head of a sports club: Centro Naval. You may stop by a nice traditional café and bar nearby; located at the corner of Tucumán and Florida Café Florida is one of those typical Buenos Aires cafés that still maintains its quality, it feels nice when you get a table and watch aged portenos enjoying their typical breakfasts and conversation.
As you continue walking three blocks from Florida and reach Suipacha you will start seeing shops selling tango shoes and accessories on this street. There is also a Milonga place (the famous tango nights where people dance in turns with one another), it is one of the most historical places in the city dating back to the begging of twentieth century: Confiteria Ideal is also on Suipacha Street. A typical taste of Buenos Aires is the traditional desert alfajores, little round desert filled with dulce de leech; you may find them anywhere and mostly in café chain Havanna. During the night time the area around Florida is less crowded, you will not have problems in finding restaurants and bars though.
The upper middle travelers would prefer the more chic renovated neighbourhood of Puerto Madero or lively and cool neighbourhood of Palermo Soho to spend more time at night.
